Medellín, 1989
Private & Confidential
You Are Cordially Invited
You are cordially invited to an intimate dinner at the private residence of Medellín's most influential patron.
The evening will be one of fine dining, rare spirits, and... important conversations.
Your attendance has been specifically requested.
The Guest List
You will be dining alongside:
Allow me to introduce the other guests who will be joining us this evening. I have chosen each one personally. They are people I trust — or, at the very least, people I prefer to keep close.
La Esposa
My wife will of course be in attendance. She has stood beside me through every chapter of our story — the public ones and the private ones. A gracious hostess, a devoted mother, a woman of extraordinary composure. I have never once seen her lose control. I sometimes wonder what it costs her.
El Contador
My accountant has been managing our family's finances for over a decade. He knows where every peso goes — and where it comes from. A quiet man. Meticulous. The kind of person who notices when a number is off by one. Lately, he has been working very late.
El Político
A dear friend and ally in the Senate. He has done more for this city than most people will ever know — and he has been generously compensated for it. We have an understanding, he and I. I trust that understanding remains... mutual.
La Periodista
I invited her myself. She has been writing about our family in the national press — not always favorably. I believe in keeping dialogue open with the media. Besides, it is better to have a journalist at your table than outside your gate.
El Primo
My cousin. We grew up together in the same barrio, shared the same hunger. I brought him into the business when no one else would. He has never forgotten that. At least, I hope he hasn't. Blood is blood — but ambition is something else entirely.
La Amante
A close personal friend. She will be seated at my left. I will say nothing more about her, except that she has a talent for making powerful men feel invincible — and careless. I am, of course, the exception.
El Rival
Yes, I have invited him. Let that surprise you. He controls the eastern corridor and has made no secret of wanting more. But tonight is about diplomacy. A man who refuses to sit with his rival is a man who has already decided on war. I have not. Not yet.
The following was found folded into the envelope. It does not appear to have been written by the host.
???
There is an eighth guest. He will not be on the list. He is Colombian — federal law enforcement, embedded under an alias. A tipoff reached us forty-eight hours ago, but we do not have a name. He could be anyone. He could be sitting next to you. Watch who asks too many questions. Watch who drinks but never gets drunk. Trust no one tonight.
